SLIDELL, La. - Rains and water rising trapped several people in two small St. Tammany communities and rescue workers were still trying to get them to safety Wednesday evening.

Boats were going out and ferrying people to safety in Indian Village in Slidell as water rose from the Pearl River and combined with heavy rains to put a few feet of water into homes.

Approximately 50 people had been taken to safety by 6 p.m. Wednesday and boaters were going out for more.

Those being taken out included adults, children and babies. Many said they had lost everything and weren't sure where they would go.

In Madisonville, several feet of water went into homes in the Guste Island area, according to St. Tammany spokesman George Bonnett.

That intrusion included Madisonville city hall, where four to five feet of water got inside.
