Widespread damage and a slow return of electricity has some schools in the metro area extending children's unwelcomed vacation past the anticpated return date of Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Lafourche and St. James school officials said public schools would be closed until further notice due to electricity and cleanup issues.

St. John schools will be closed until at least Monday, Sept. 10.

Jefferson Parish schools and St. Charles Parish schools were preparing to make announcements on the status of schools there by Monday afternoon.

The extended time off may prove to be a hardship if parents need to return to work.

In other places, like Orleans, though many schools planned to return on Tuesday, individual situations could vary. Audubon Charter, in Orleans, for instance, said its school suffered heavy damage on its two campuses and would be closed until Monday, Sept. 10. NOCCA was hoping to reopen its arts offerings on Wednesday, Sept. 5.
