Thirteen-year-old Sarah Chiasson of Marrero was fishing in a pond over the levee
just south of Joshua's Marina in Buras, when she caught this 17 inch black drum
(about 2lbs). She was so excited to catch her first fish. It was on the
evening of Dec 20th just before dark. The weather was perfect and not too cold.
She was fishing with a classic Zebco reel with a 1/2 ounce jig head with bait
shrimp on it. The tide was rising (2 ft range) and we were standing in ankle
deep water in the tall grass as we kept backing up to try to keep our feet dry.
When the fish hit the bait, she wasn't sure what to do as she watched her fish
zig zag across the pond. She just kept reeling it in until it was on the
grass.
