Marigny becoming the new heart of Mardi Gras for locals

It's partly because everyone joins in the Society of St. Anne Walking Parade, showing off some of the best homemade costumes.

NEW ORLEANS — Look at the crowds every Mardi Gras day, and you'll see a sea of people all over the city, specifically the French Quarter and the Marigny.

Tourists flock to Bourbon Street, but that isn't the only popular spot. The Marigny, arguably, draws in an even bigger crowd.

"I came out here at like 7:30 and the streets were just trashed and now it looks like nothing had happened," Mason Allen and Candon Williams, Marigny residents, said.

Not even 24 hours ago, the Marigny was full of color, costumes and character.

"It's wild, you open your door and you see 300 people plus," Allen and Williams said.

They believe the neighborhood is one of the most popular spots to spend Fat Tuesday.

"So many people, so many people coming in and out," Allen and Williams said.

Visitors typically walk down Bourbon Street, but Levi Chancellor at Mimi's in the Marigny believes his neighborhood is where you'll find locals Mardi Gras day.

"Like five years ago you would know everybody on the street," he said.

Since, he believes the neighborhood has attracted visitors too.

"People are just like 'ooo! there's this neighborhood that's really wild,'" he said.

It's partly because everyone joins in the Society of St. Anne Walking Parade, showing off some of the best homemade costumes.

"Very colorful, you see all walks of life," Allen and Williams said.

While the streets are a little quieter now, the lively crowd is sure to be back for Mardi Gras 2021.
