HENDERSON, La. — The Humane Society of Louisiana is offering a reward for information after eight puppies were tossed from a bridge Sunday into a St. Martin Parish bayou.

Director Jeff Dorson said the puppies were "lucky to be alive" after being rescued from the bayou "with just moments to spare."

Dorson said a fisherman saw a man stop his truck on a wooden bridge behind Pat's Restaurant on Potato Shed Road and toss a dog food bag into the bayou. The fisherman went to retrieve it, thinking it was litter, and instead found eight black lab mix puppies in the water.

The humane society suspects the puppies were less than five days old. They are all expected to survive.

Dorson said the man was driving a white, older model truck that had a built-in dog kennel with yellow trim in the back. The humane society is offering a $500 reward for information that leads to an arrest.

“We are horrified that anyone would be so callous and cruel to these defenseless, newborn puppies,” Dorson said. “We are hopeful that the $500 reward we are offering will help the St. Martin Sheriff’s Department find this perpetrator and seek justice in this case.”

Anyone having information is asked to contact the Humane Society of Louisiana at info@humanela.org or at 1-888-6-HUMANE. All information will be shared with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Department.

Anyone interested in adopting the puppies can visit the Every Paw Animal Rescue Facebook Page.

"These are most definitely miracle babies and thanks to so many involved they will be able to have a chance," a post on the rescue's Facebook Page said. "We will be able to show them that not all humans are heartless and unloving."

UPDATE ON BASIN PUPS These 8 furbabies are doing amazing. ... There was 2 that when we first got them were cold and not very responsive. They are now thriving and very active. The runts have grown and you can hardly tell which ones they are now.
