8-year-old girl among injured in St. Claude gunfight, triple shooting

At least two suspects started shooting at each other Sunday evening, injuring three people

NEW ORLEANS — Police are investigating a gunfight off of St. Claude Avenue that injured three people Sunday evening, including an 8-year-old girl, officials said.

According to NOPD reports, at least two suspects started shooting at each other around 6:20 p.m. in the 1200 block of Marais Street before speeding away from the scene in separate vehicles.

When police arrived at the scene, they found that an 8-year-old girl and a 29-year-old woman received graze wounds from the bullets. A 26-year-old man was also shot in the chest.

Without taking an ambulance, the victims went to the hospital for treatment, where they were listed in stable condition.

Residents in the area during the shooting said they heard nearly 20 gunshots go off. The location of the incident, at the intersection of Marais and Piety Streets, is just a few houses away from the Greater Liberty Baptist Church.

Police officials did not list a potential motive nor the names of the suspects in the shootout Sunday night but said the investigation is ongoing. No further details were available.

The shooting happened about three miles from the New Orleans Fairgrounds, where the 50th annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival wrapped up its first Sunday of music around the same time.

Police officials say that anyone with information into crimes that happened in the Greater New Orleans area should call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
