Accused Mandina's shooting gunman linked to teen's death in Houston a week later

The Texas shooting happened about a week after Kyron Fazande was accused of killing Hilbert Walker III as he was serving a table at Mandina's Restaurant.

HOUSTON — A man accused of fatally shooting a waiter outside of Mandina's Restaurant in New Orleans has been linked to the shooting death of a 15-year-old in Houston, police say.

The Houston Police Department said 22-year-old Kyron Keith Fazande has been charged with murder in connection with a deadly shooting on May 6 at an apartment complex in Harris County. Police say officers responded to the 2200 block of Avenida La Quinta Street around 11:30 a.m. and found the 15-year-old lying on a sidewalk with a gunshot wound. Paramedics later pronounced the teen dead at the scene.

Houston Police say a dispute between the 15-year-old and Fazande led to the shooting.

The Texas shooting happened about a week after Fazande was accused of killing Hilbert Walker III as he was serving a table at Mandina's Restaurant. A second person inside the restaurant, a 54-year-old woman, was also struck by gunfire.

Walker's mother, Gesina Walker, says she is saddened that Fazande may have committed another murder while on the run.

“I think it’s awful. I’m glad he’s being held. I hope he’s not let back out. He seems like a heartless person. I hope they get him to New Orleans, and he’s held accountable for Hilbert’s murder," Gesina Walker said.

Fazande was arrested on May 8 in Houston by a joint task force between the New Orleans Police Department and the U.S. Marshals. He is facing murder, attempted murder, and battery charges for the shooting in New Orleans.

Houston Police say witness statements and other evidence allowed them to identify Fazande as a suspect in the teen's killing. He was charged for the second shooting while in custody, awaiting extradition in the Fort Bend County Jail.

"The NOPD will not comment on charges filed by another jurisdiction.

Kyron Fazande remains in custody in Texas. He will be extradited back to Orleans Parish when the legal process determines it is appropriate to do so," the NOPD said.
