COVINGTON, La. — An Alabama man was arrested after allegedly leading deputies into a car chase in a stolen car near Covington Wednesday morning.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office said Leroy Campbell was spotted driving on I-12 in a stolen Honda Accord. Deputies say a chase ensued and Campbell turned off I-12 to Pinnacle Parkway and drove on the wrong side of the road against the flow of traffic.

The chase later ended after Louisiana State Police helped block the stolen vehicle behind several local businesses. No one was hurt in the chase.

Campbell was taken into custody and booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail on charges of possession of stolen property, flight from an officer, driving under suspension, improper lane use, obstruction of a highway, no seatbelt and open alcoholic container.

Additional charges could be filed for auto theft, deputies say. The vehicle was reported stolen from a Covington-area business Saturday. Video showed an unidentified man leaving in the stolen car which had been left in the parking lot with the keys inside.

The sheriff's office said Campbell had paperwork showing that he was expected to appear in the 22nd Judicial District Court Wednesday for a status hearing.

Deputies say Campbell has a criminal history that includes arrests for burglary and auto theft. He was released from the St. Tammany Parish Jail Friday and plead guilty on unrelated charges for possession of stolen property Tuesday.
