Man killed and woman shot Christmas Night, 5th shooting in 5 days in Algiers

A deadly shooting on Christmas night is just one in a violent string of incidents spilling over from the weekend in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans.

A violent week in New Orleans' Algiers neighborhood was capped off with a deadly Christmas night shooting that left one man dead. It was the fifth reported shooting in the neighborhood since Friday, Dec. 21.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, the latest shooting happened at the intersection of General Myers Avenue and Casimire Street around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday. Police a man, later identified by family members as 48-year-old Leon Bush of Violet, La., and an unidentified woman was shot. 

Bush was shot multiple times and died at the scene. The woman was taken to the hospital and listed in critical condition.

Family members tell WWL-TV that Bush, a father of three daughters, was in New Orleans for the holidays.

The shooting remains under investigation, and police say they are still trying to find out a motive for the attack.

A violent week in Algiers

The Christmas shooting is just one in a violent string of incidents spilling over from the weekend in Algiers.

On Friday night, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the neck while looking out the window of his home around 10:20 p.m in the 1600 block of Southlawn Boulevard.

Hours later on Saturday morning, another shooting around 7 a.m. along the 1800 block of Lauradale Drive ended with a 19-year-old woman grazed by a bullet and a 25-year-old man shot in the knee.

Saturday afternoon, shots rang out around 4:15 p.m. in the 800 block of Belleville Street. Police say a man got into a fight with 22-year-old Albert Morris. During the fight, Morris allegedly pulled out a gun and shot the 21-year-old victim in the chest. The victim was taken to an area hospital. Morris then fled the scene but was arrested without incident Sunday.

Monday afternoon, a shooting around 4 p.m. in the 3500 block of Vespasian Boulevard also wounded a 21-year-old man. Police say the man was shot by another man wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and dark-colored pants. The victim was taken to a hospital where he was listed in critical condition.
