Two dead after Mid-City shooting, second victim died at the hospital: NOPD

Two other shootings besides this one left another man dead and one other injured in New Orleans last night.

NEW ORLEANS — A man and a woman were killed in a shooting in Mid-City just after midnight Saturday, New Orleans Police Department officials say.

The pair were reportedly in the 600 block of S. Pierce Street around 12:25 a.m. when they were shot multiple times by a hooded man riding a cruiser-style female bicycle, according to preliminary NOPD reports.

Police responded to the scene, where the male victim was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival. The woman was rushed to the hospital, where she died Saturday night.

On Monday, the Orleans Parish Coroner identified the victims as Angel Funez and Niukura Gonzales, both 25-years-old.

A homicide investigation was opened and no further information was immediately available.

The double shooting off S. Carrollton Avenue marked the second and third homicides of the night under NOPD investigation and the third shooting in total.

Earlier Friday night, around 10 p.m., police officials announced they had found the body of a man in New Orleans East who had been shot multiple times.

Police also responded to another shooting in the East about two hours before that, in which a man was reportedly shot twice and rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The commonplace gun violence comes as multiple, extreme spikes in car break-ins around the city have been the new normal for New Orleans residents.
