NOPD arrests murder suspect four hours after shooting

A suspect was arrested less than five hours after allegedly shooting a man to death on the Westbank Thursday.

NEW ORLEANS —

Police arrested a suspect Thursday after a man was shot in the back and ran to a gas station before dying on the Westbank.

The New Orleans Police Department said they believe 34-year-old Darnell Celestin shot the victim, who was not identified, near the intersection of Deleware and Arizona streets just after 2 p.m. The victim then fled to a gas station in the 2600 block of General DeGaulle Drive, where he was pronounced dead.

Less than five hours later, at 6:45 p.m., NOPD investigators arrested Celestin on one count of second-degree murder.

Celestin was placed under arrest and subsequently booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact NOPD Fourth District detectives at 504-658-6040.
