Suspect running from police breaks leg after jumping into empty drainage canal

Police say Corey Greathouse jumped into a drainage canal to escape police, but the canal was empty.

NEW ORLEANS -- A man driving a stolen vehicle broke his leg while trying to escape police Wednesday morning, according to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office.

The suspect, 28-year-old Corey Greathouse, was allegedly driving a stolen 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander when police attempted to pull him over in Arabi.

According to police, Greathouse refused to pull over and deputies followed him into the Lower Ninth Ward. Greathouse then bailed out of his vehicle near the corner of Alvar Street and FLorida Avenue and fled on foot.

Police continued to chase him until he jumped into an empty drainage canal, falling about 20 feet and breaking one of his legs.

He was then apprehended by deputies and taken to University Medical Center for treatment. After he is treated, Greathouse will be transported to St. Bernard Parish Prison and booked with possession of stolen property, flight from an officer and reckless operation.
