TOMS RIVER, N.J. — A teacher in New Jersey is being investigated after he had students pretend to be slaves during a history lesson, WBRZ reported.

Teaching 8th-grade social studies at Toms River Intermediate School, Lawrence Cuneo made students pretend to pick cotton and lay on the floor as 'slaves,' reports said.

In one student's social media post, the student accused Cuneo of simulating the sound of a cracking whip over the students and kicking their feet.

WBRZ reported the teacher said the lesson was meant to show how 'degrading and despicable the institution of slavery was in our history."
