JEFFERSON, Pa. — A Jefferson Parish firefighter is still in critical condition Wednesday, but he is stable and breathing on his own, according to JP fire officials.

According to Jefferson Parish fire chief David Tibbetts, 49-year-old Dan Zeigler fell through the roof during a two-alarm fire in old Metairie Saturday afternoon. The fire occurred at the DeLimon complex on Rue St. Peters Street and left about 100 residents displaced.

Zeigler suffered second and third-degree burns. According to Chief Tibbetts, Zeigler was taken off a ventilator and is breathing on his own. He said surgery is planned for Zeigler next week.

Another firefighter was injured, who helped Tibbetts after he fell through the roof. That firefighter suffered a minor burn to his hand and was treated then released from the hospital.

A gGoFundMe page was started to help with Zielger’s medical costs. The campaign’s goal of $100,000 has raised more than $26,000.
