NEW ORLEANS — The Louisiana Department of Health has reported 8,080 deaths and 364,853 diagnosed cases of COVID-19.

298,614 people in the state have presumptively recovered from the disease.

A person is presumed recovered if it has been more than 14 days since they have tested positive and is not currently in the hospital, or it has been 21 days since testing positive and has not died.

Reported cases have ranged from mild illness (similar to a common cold) to severe pneumonia that requires hospitalization. So far, deaths have been reported worldwide mainly in older adults who had other health conditions.

Louisiana was first struck by COVID-19 cases in March of 2020. The state went through an economic shutdown in order to curb the spread of the virus, but began opening up in several phased increments over the summer.

Nationally, more than 8 million coronavirus cases have been reported, and more than 200,000 people have died from the disease or complications caused by it.

While Louisiana was initially one of the hotspots for coronavirus, with cases per million people among the highest in the nation, new cases have declined from that peak.
