'I have nothing now' homeowner says after Kenner 2-alarm fire

According to the Kenner Fire Department, one person was inside the home in the 400 block of Taylor Street when the fire started.

KENNER, La. — Firefighters battled a two-alarm fire at a home in Kenner Wednesday morning.

Around 6:17 a.m., black smoke was seen rising from a home in the 400 block of Taylor Street. Neighbors walking in the area called 911 after spotting the smoke, and firefighters arrived on the scene three minutes later.

Homeowner Jerome Turner said he was asleep when the fire started inside an electrical socket that had a space heater connected. He said he tried to put the fire out but it only got bigger.

"I am just thankful that I was able to get out," Turner said. "I have nothing now."

A spokesperson for the Kenner Fire Department said the home was considered a total loss.

Turner said that he is diabetic and all of his medication was inside the home. He also said that he had lived at the location for 75 years and did not have insurance on the home.

Parts of Taylor Street have been closed as firefighters battle the flames.

Those who wish to donate to Turner can do so via GoFundMe by clicking here.
