15-year-old killed in shooting in Algiers, police say

The boy later died at an area hospital.

The New Orleans Police Department is investigating a shooting that left a 15-year-old boy dead in Algiers.

The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, in the 3900 block of Sullen Place.

The boy was taken to University Medical Center by EMS. He later died at the hospital.

Police identified the 15-year-old as Chad Smith.

A local activist WWL-TV spoke to said the entire community needs to come together to stop the violence.

"I think the community got to come together as a whole. It's called community engagement. We really can't point the finger at everybody if we aren't going to help save our own kids lives," Michael Willis, of Helping Other People Endure, said.

"Children get killed, elderly people get shot sitting on their porch minding their own businesses. It's a black eye for the whole city....basically we got to come together as a whole again."
