Clancy's commentary: gun violence protests

Something has to change, but our nation's leaders offer nothing more than thoughts, prayers, platitudes and excuses.

ALGIERS – A local student prayer and vigil against gun violence that took place on Tuesday in Algiers is a part of a much larger national movement.

Like many others, I’ve been a hunter and responsible gun owner my entire life. During that time, we’ve seen the rate of gun violence in America reach a point where kids are not even safe at school.

Something has to change, but our nation’s leaders offer nothing more than thoughts, prayers, platitudes and excuses.

That’s not enough.

That’s why the national debate about gun safety and responsible gun ownership is now “owned” by students. They rightly feel their parents’ generation has let them down. So, they’re protesting in New Orleans and nationwide.

My generation protested a war in Vietnam. Today, sadly the battle lines are right here in America and the stakes are higher than ever.
