Mandatory evacuation issued for residents near southwest Louisiana chemical plant

Drivers are asked to reroute to major highways and other alternative routes.

RAYNE, La. – Crews are investigating a fire at the Flowchem chemical blending facility in Duson.

According to a report from KLFY, the fire erupted around 4 p.m. and, as of 10 p.m., was still blazing.

There is a mandatory evacuation in place for anyone within a mile north of the Flowchem facility according to KLFY. Those within three miles north of the 289 Cutlass Loop location have been asked to shelter in place by State Police.

No injuries have been reported.

Acadia Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness says Xylene is among the chemicals contributing to the fire. If inhaled, it can cause respiratory issues.

Both lanes of I-10 from the Lafayette I-49 exit to Crowley are closed. Drivers are asked to reroute to major highways and other alternative routes.

There is no timetable for the Interstate to reopen. The department of Environmental Quality is performing air quality tests before the evacuation can be lifted.
