ST. ROSE, La. -- Lance Permillion from LaPlace is one of a handful of ITT Tech students who rushed down to the St. Rose campus on Tuesday, after learning classes there have been canceled indefinitely.
He found the doors locked and no information posted instructing students on what to do.
"Very aggravated," Permillion said. "Nobody is here to answer any questions. They got students calling the deans and stuff and nobody knows anything."
The for-profit college chain announced it is shutting down its 130 campuses across the country, including the two Louisiana campuses in St. Rose outside of New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
The move comes just days after the U.S. Department of Education banned it from enrolling new students who use federal financial aid.
The school has been the subject of state and federal investigations focusing on its recruiting and accounting practices. ITT released a statement calling the government sanctions inappropriate and unconstitutional.
"The explanation that they're giving us, that it's the government's fault, everything's the government's fault nowadays, you all have to come better than that," Permillion said.
ITT's sudden closure now leaves students with large student loans, no degree and a lot of uncertainty.
"I don't want to start over with a new loan, I already got $23,000 on me," ITT student Maria Arcuaga said. "I don't know what's going to happen. I'm worried."
"I don't know what to think right now," ITT student Michael Chauvin said. "I think I'm still in shock about it. I'm just looking for answers now."
"I wonder if we're going to get any forgiveness or are they going to reimburse our money or anything," Permillion said. "It's just crazy. I don't understand it."
According to the school, more than 8,000 ITT Tech employees are now without a job.
