Suspect in fatal causeway crash will go to trial in September

Matte's trial date is set for Sept. 4, 2018.

GRETNA, La. -- The woman accused of causing a fatal crash on the Causeway Bridge while drunk will face trial in Metairie this fall.

Olivia Matte is charged with Vehicular Homicide in the crash that killed James Blackmond. Police say Matte blew double the legal limit after the crash. It was her third DWI.

Matte's trial date is set for Sept. 4, 2018. Whether that trial will be in front of jury or not has yet to be decided. That will come during a motion hearing on July 9.

Matte is accused in the death of James Blackmond and injuring his brother-in-law as they drove to work in Port Fourchon before dawn March 21, 2017. She had a blood alcohol content of 0.21 after the crash, well above the legal limit of 0.08.

In addition to the vehicular homicide and injuring charges, Matte was also charged with operating a vehicle while under suspension and failure to maintain control of a vehicle, according to Jefferson Parish court records.

The arrest after the fatal Causeway accident was Matte’s third DWI arrest in less than a year.

Matte pleaded not guilty on June 2, 2017.
