METAIRIE -- The Lakeside Mall's Christmas display takes a moment to remind shoppers that there's something in the air in Jefferson Parish this year.
The Jefferson Parish landfill on the West Bank, known for causing a foul smell throughout part of the parish, has a prominent spot in this year's display. The artist even threw in some skunks for good measure!
Liquid industrial waste at the parish landfill in Waggaman caused hydrogen sulfide to leak from the collection wells there, leaving residents in the River Ridge, Harahan and Waggaman areas with a nasty smell that some say is causing health problems.
The Lakeside Mall holiday display is known for taking a sometimes satirical view of current events, such as including blue tarps on the roofs of miniature houses after Hurricane Katrina. The artist behind it also made headlines in recent years for decorations that appeared to take political stances on health care and immigration issues.
