HOUMA, La. -- A woman is dead after state police say she lost control of her car and crashed into Bayou Terrebonne early Sunday morning.

Louisiana State Police say the wreck happened on LA 56 shortly after 1 a.m.

Brittany Jones, 30, was coming out of a left curve when she ran off the roadway to the right, troopers said. Her 2001 Ford Mustang hit a utility pole and then went into Bayou Terrebonne, where it became completely submerged, according to state police.

Jones died at the scene.

State police said they do not know if impairment was a factor in the crash at this time. They also said they are still investigating if Jones was wearing a seat belt when the crash happened.
