A toddler died Tuesday days after being pulled out of a swimming pool, authorities said.

Deputies and detectives were called out Saturday morning to a home on 5294 La. 56 after an unresponsive 2-year-old boy was found floating in an above-ground swimming pool, the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

The child, identified as Carter Lirette, had been attending a family gathering before the Chauvin Mardi Gras parade, the Sheriff’s Office said. There was large number of children and adults present when the accident occurred.

A nurse on the scene began administering CPR on the toddler shortly before deputies and the Little Caillou Fire Department arrived, the Sheriff’s Office said. The child was transported to Terrebonne Medical Center, where he remained on life support.

The toddler was eventually airlifted to Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, where he died Tuesday morning, the Sheriff’s Office said. The death has been ruled as an accidental drowning.
