A man shot and killed his estranged wife this morning in Raceland before turning the gun on himself, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office said.

Chelsi Eschette, 33, died outside a home at 4182 La. 1 after she sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

The suspect, Josh Eschette, 32, is in critical condition after he shot himself once in the head, Sheriff Craig Webre said. He was airlifted to University Medical Center New Orleans.

Webre said the call came in about 9:52 a.m., and deputies and detectives found the bodies in the driveway.

"It's an unusual case in that there were no prior reports of any issues, domestic issues," Webre said. "No complaints, no investigations, no protective orders, none of the things that you often see when you have a domestic murder-suicide."

The sheriff said according to family members, the couple had separated a few times before the incident and there had been threats made, but no indication of physical violence.

Sheriff's Sgt. Brennan Matherne said the investigation is ongoing, with detectives are interviewing neighbors, family and friends.

A large number of loved ones were at the scene, some crying and hugging one another. One woman told a reporter and photographer to stay off the property.
