Almost a year after her mysterious death, family and friends gathered to remember Kaylan Ward.
Desteny Jones said she remembers the day she lost her 16-year-old best friend.
"I didn't believe it at first," Jones said. "As the days go by, it hits me that she really isn't here."
Ward's body was found dismembered on the side of I-10E last June and when Autoumn Francois learned of her death, she broke down.
"I was just crying and crying and my heart was broken," she said. "That was my friend. The girl I grew up with. I had long-time memories with her and I am never going to get them back."
In an effort to keep Ward's story alive, her mother has devoted the last year to telling her daughter's story by writing a book as a means of closure and to help those her child loved.
"A lot of her friends encountered problems after her death and I felt like her story could let them know this is a cold world," Kenisha Martin, Ward's mother, said.
According to the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office, Ward died of multiple blunt traumatic injuries. The New Orleans Police Department said she may have been hit by several cars on the interstate that morning. What her mom can't figure out is why the teenager was on the interstate in the first place.
"I know my child," Martin said. "She was not walking on no interstate. It was unbelievable when they were telling me."
If Ward was alive, Monday would be her 17th birthday.
"I have found ways to get through it," Martin said. "Like right now I would be planning her party or preparing her party."
Martin said though there haven't been any updates since last year she plans to find out what happened to daughter.
"Hopefully someone will come forward and will say something about what they know," she said.
