COVINGTON, La. — First responders say a carbon monoxide alarm saved the lives of a Covington family over the weekend.

Louisiana's State Fire Marshal's Office shared the story of the DeNicola family on its Facebook Page on Monday. The family said the alarm sounded while the family was sleeping, and firefighters later found carbon monoxide throughout their entire home and attic.

The fire marshal's office said the source of the carbon monoxide was determined to be a natural gas leak connected to an appliance that had recently been installed.

"After our generator was installed, we upgraded to the combo smoke / CO ring detectors, and thankfully they prevented tragedy," the family's social media post said. "By the grace of God and a solid alarm, we were protected, and I highly recommend the system."

The SFM Office said that CO can still be a danger when purchasing a newer home or appliance.

"The DeNicolas say a safety message from the SFM led them to ensure they had a working carbon monoxide alarm. Let this safety message from them inspire you to do the same," the SFM said.
