Police arrest man accused of robbing 92-year-old WWII veteran in retirement community

Police connected the suspect to another armed robbery in St. Tammany Parish.

The man accused of robbing a 92-year-old World War II veteran at gunpoint is in police custody.

According to the Slidell Police Department, officers arrested 41-year-old Jonathan Gabriel for robbery and home invasion.

Police say Gabriel knocked on the 92-year-old's door in the Lafittes Landing retirement community around 5:45 p.m. Thursday. When the veteran answered, Gabriel allegedly pulled out a gun and forced his way into the 92-year-old's home. Police say he stole cash, medication and the veteran's car.

Police identified Gabriel as a suspect using surveillance video and through tips that came in, but before police could complete their investigation he'd already been arrested for an outstanding child support warrant.

Gabriel has since been booked with armed robbery, felon in possession of a firearm and theft of a motor vehicle.

“Anyone who preys on the elderly has no place in our community," Chief Randy Fandall said. "This crime was solved due to a collaborative effort by many different people. Good surveillance video from a local business, help from our citizens, and excellent investigative work helped us identify and arrest Jonathan Gabriel. Criminals should take note that our citizens have proved, time and time again, we will not stand for this in or community.”
