Isidore Newman School closed Friday after threatening, racist letter

The school noted that the threatening letter specifically mentions Jan. 24.

NEW ORLEANS — Isidore Newman School will be closed Friday after receiving a threatening, racist letter, school officials announced Thursday evening.

“Earlier this week, a school employee opened an anonymous letter addressed to Newman that contained threatening and racially charged language,” the message to parents said. “The employee alerted us, and we immediately contacted the New Orleans Police Department and the FBI who are working together. We also convened our School’s Crisis Response Team.”

The school noted that the threatening letter specifically mentions Jan. 24.

The statement says the source of the letter is still unknown, but detectives are working closely with the school to find out who sent it.

The school has also increased security measures at the school “for the foreseeable future” in response to the letter.

“We know this information will be unsettling for our community. I want to remind and reassure you that the safety and security of our students, teachers, and families remain our chief priority. We take this type of situation seriously and are doing everything in our power to ensure safety,” the message to parents said.
