Two teens arrested after 2 carjackings, 2 crashes, exchange of gunfire with police

The first carjacking occurred after 8 a.m. and police said the suspects used the vehicle to commit the second one on or near the UNO campus.

NEW ORLEANS — The NOPD says that two teen suspects are in custody after a pair of carjackings, an exchange of gunfire with a police officer and two crashes Monday morning.

According to Superintendent Shaun Ferguson, the two suspects, 19-year-old Corey Jodran and an unidentified 15-years-old, first carjacked a white Honda Accord in the 10000 block of Saigon in New Orleans East and used that vehicle to then carjack a University of New Orleans student of a silver SUV near the intersection of Leon C. Simon and Waldo, right near campus.

A short time later, police located the SUV in New Orleans East and began a pursuit that ended when the teen in the silver SUV crashed on Bullard Avenue just off the I-10 exit. Ferguson said that suspect got out of the vehicle and exchanged gunfire with a levee board police officer before being arrested. No one was struck in the exchange.

A short time later, Ferguson said the Accord was located after it crashed near Morrison Road and Gannon Road. That ended a manhunt that involved several police units in the area.

Jordan was booked with attempted murder of a police officer. Police say additional charges are coming and that charges for the 15-year-old are pending.

Bishop McManus Academy was placed on lockdown as a precaution during the hunt for the suspects.

The University of New Orleans Police Department sent an email to all students and staff that said a student was carjacked in the Lafitte Village parking lot. The email said a white Honda Accord pulled up to the student's car and three masked suspects got out and demanded the car.

The Accord was also reported stolen earlier in the day, the university's police department said.

The exit ramp from I-10 to Bullard Avenue was closed due to the accident, the Louisiana DOTD said. It was reopened later in the day.
