New Orleans will use school buses to help get food to children out of school

NOLAPS is partnering with FirstLine Schools to use their bus fleet to deliver meals.

NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Public Schools are planning a new program to deliver school meals to students using a charter school organization’s bus fleet.

The school district announced Thursday that it has partnered with FirstLine Schools, a charter management organization, to use that charter group’s bus fleet to deliver meals under the Citywide Feeding Program during the forced shutdown of schools due to coronavirus.

On Wednesday, WWL-TV reported that one charter school, Warren Easton High School, was using its bus fleet to deliver school assignments and materials to students who didn’t have internet access. Armtrice Cowart, a Warren Easton parent, praised the school’s creativity, but suggested the school district should use the buses for distributing food, as other districts around the country have.

To this point, the district has partnered with the city’s recreation department, charter schools and nonprofits to set up 43 meal distribution sites. The district said about 42,000 meals had been served to students at those sites since Monday.
