NEW ORLEANS - A City Council representative will be back on the New Orleans Sewerage & Water Board after voters approved a charter change this weekend. Thursday, those voters are expected to get a better picture about what that representation will be.

According to the New Orleans Advocate, the proposal approved Saturday with 65 percent of the total vote means the chair of the Public Works Committee, a member of that committee or a civil engineer reporting to the council will hold that seat.

Public Works Committee Chairman Joe Giarrusso said he does not intend to sit on the board himself because of the workload on his committee, the Advocate reports. Giarrusso has called a committee meeting Thursday to discuss the new role on the board.

In 2013, voters approved a charter change that removed three City Council seats on the S&WB. That meant that all members of the S&WB were appointed by the mayor. Louisiana state Senator J.P. Morrell, who supported both the 2018 and 2013 charter change, said the latest proposal would add a new perspective to the board.
