Toddler accidentally shot in Algiers, according to police

Investigators say the shooting was "accidental in nature," raising questions on what led to the incident.

NEW ORLEANS — A 3-year-old boy was shot Wednesday night on the west bank in what New Orleans police are calling an accident.

According to New Orleans police, the child was with his father and an "acquaintance" outside a home in the 40 block of Westpark Court when the acquaintance's gun accidentally discharged wounding the child.

Police say the man then fled the scene while the father called for help.

Police were then called out to the 3500 block of General DeGaulle Drive around 11 p.m. and took the child to the hospital.

Police say the 3-year-old suffered a graze gunshot wound.

Detectives are working to identify the shooter in this case. When found, they will be charged with negligent injuring, according to NOPD.

Anyone with information on this shooting is asked to call CRIMESTOPPERS at 504-822-1111.
