Local parishes prep for heavy rain from Alberto

"Don't wait until you hear a bad storm is approaching before you think about being prepared,"

NEW ORLEANS – As hurricane season approaches and we are monitoring possible tropical development in the Gulf of Mexico, parishes around the New Orleans Metro area are preparing.

Officials in Orleans Parish are asking residents to prepare for heavy and possible street flooding caused by Invest 90. Residents are also asked to clean debris from catch basins near their home to allow water to drain easily.

St. Bernard Parish is reminding residents to have supplies ready now to get a game plan before severe weather is forecast to impact our area.

“Don’t wait until you hear a bad storm is approaching before you think about being prepared,” St. Bernard Parish Sheriff James Pohlman said.

Plaquemines Parish is holding a hurricane preparedness workshop Tuesday, May 29 at 9:30 a.m. at the Belle Chasse Auditorium at 8398 Highway 23. The National Hurricane Center and other emergency agencies will be there to help residents prepare for hurricane season.

St. John the Baptist Parish says local government is monitoring Invest 90 and residents should prepare for possible tropical activity this weekend. Residents are asked to pick up trash and debris around their home, check on home emergency kits and tie down garbage cans.

Residents in St. Tammany Parish are asked to sign up for weather alerts through Smart911. To sign up for alerts, click here.

The Terrebonne Parish government is offering free sandbags to residents starting at noon Friday, May 25 at two locations. Residents will need to fill their own bags at the following locations:

  • The Houma Airbase Adult Softball Complex, 9544 E. Main St.
  • Cannata's Grocery parking lot, 6307 W. Park Ave.

“It’s going to be a slow-moving storm, so we may not get most of the weather until Sunday and possibly Monday and Tuesday,” Terrebonne Emergency Preparedness Director Earl Eues told Houmatoday. “It’s a holiday weekend so people need to continue have vigilance and maintain and monitor the system.”

Officials in Lafourche Parish say they will decide Friday whether to open sandbag locations for residents.

“We’re in better shape than we’ve ever been because we’ve installed new pump stations and new pumps,” Lafourche Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle said.

Hurricane season begins on Friday, June 1.
