A father and son from Plaquemines Parish were honored Monday in Arlington National Cemetery with an award as citizen heroes for their work rescuing Hurricane Isaac victims.

Jesse Shaffer III and Jesse Shaffer IV of Braithwaite were presented the Citizen Service Before Self award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation.

'During Hurricane Isaac, this father-and-son team used their boat to rescue 120 people from their flood-ravaged town after official rescues were called off,' said the foundation in presenting the award.

The Shaffers and other honorees were chosen by Medal of Honor recipients from a pool of 23 finalists, among hundreds of hero nominations from across the U.S. between September and December 2012.

The awards were presented Monday in a special ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, attended by Medal of Honor recipients.
