NEW ORLEANS – A New Orleans Police Department officer resigned on Monday after she was accused of stealing wireless earphones from the Apple store in Metairie while in uniform, according to The New Orleans Advocate.
According to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, 24-year-old Ayona McGilberry picked up her phone on Monday after it was repaired at the Apple store in Lakeside Mall. She asked to see the wireless earphones, which cost about $160, while inside the store.
The sheriff’s office says, McGilberry indicated that she would not purchase them, however she then walked out of the store without paying.
The store had McGilberry’s contact information and contacted the sheriff’s office about the incident. Investigators reached out to NOPD and once she learned of the inquiry, McGilberry resigned.
NOPD hired her in July 2016.
