Sheriff: Passenger in stolen vehicle killed as it sped from police, crashed in Marrero

According to Lopinto, the Prius was recognized by a license plate recognition camera as having been stolen out of New Orleans two days ago.

MARRERO – A stolen car speeding from police crashed into two other vehicles with the passenger in the stolen vehicle being killed in the crash.

The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Fourth Street in Marrero.

“I don’t care who was driving the vehicle, but they knew the person in the vehicle with them and they have to live with that for the rest of their life,” said Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto.

According to Lopinto, the Prius was recognized by a license plate recognition camera as having been stolen out of New Orleans two days ago. A Westwego police unit began to follow the Prius, which Lopinto said then sped off down Fourth Street.

Lopinto said the car was trying to dodge and go around other vehicles, but at some point the driver lost control of the vehicle, which slammed into two other cars.

The passenger in the stolen vehicle was killed. The driver was being taken to the hospital and his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. The driver of the car that was struck by the stolen vehicle was not injured. The other vehicle was an unoccupied, parked car.

“You’re going to have mothers and families that are grieving over children over a stolen car,” said Lopinto. "The reality is people get arrested and it's not the end of their life... People can get arrested and move on to another day. If you're doing something stupid, stop. An arrest is not the end of the world to lose a life."
