CHALMETTE, La. — A 35-year-old New Orleans man was arrested and booked on a count of second-degree murder after the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office said he apparently shot through the window of a home in Chalmette, killing the man inside.

The incident occurred Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. in the 3600 block of Shangri-La Drive in Chalmette.

According to the sheriff's office, Matthew Squyres was booked into the St. Bernard Parish jail. Bond has not been set.

A sheriff's office spokesman said that officers were called to the Shangri-La location to look into a report of shots fired.

Once there, officers said they noticed bullet holes in a window of the residence. Knocks on the door went unanswered and officers went inside and found a man lying on the ground with bullet wounds.

That man was later identified by his employer Pam Fortner, co-owner of the famous Tropical Isle bar on Bourbon Street, as 56-year-old Larry Hill.

Fortner said Hill, a New Jersey native, had worked at the bar for 30 years and was well-known and well-liked around the French Quarter.

"Larry was a gentleman and would help folks who needed help and he was jovial and said hi to his friends up and down the streets of the French Quarter. He would do many things to help Earl and I or others who needed a little help," Fortner wrote on Facebook.

Sheriff James Pohlmann said the two men were acquainted and that the shooting followed a prior altercation.
