Sheriff: Woman stabbed husband to death after fight with 5 of their children present

EDGARD, La. — A woman accused of fatally stabbing her husband while five of their children were home has turned herself in to law enforcement, the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday.

The fatal stabbing occurred around 11 p.m. Tuesday in the 100 block of East Sixth Street.

Rita Baker Grows, 33, was booked with second-degree murder and simple escape.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies went to the address for a call of a stabbing. They said the deceased, 36-year-old Joradae Grows, and Rita Baker Grows had been fighting when the stabbing occurred.

Five of the couple’s children, ages 15, 14, 12 with two 7-year-old twins, were at the home when the stabbing occurred.

Joradae Grows had been stabbed in the chest and emergency crews worked on him at the scene, but were not successful in saving him.

Rita Baker Grows was cuffed and placed in the rear of a marked unit, but somehow managed to escape from the rear of the car.

The sheriff’s office said that she turned herself in to the Sherman Walker Correctional Facility about 11:30 Wednesday, still in handcuffs.
