St. John deputy wounded in car crash while chasing armed suspect

The officer sustained a broken arm, broken ribs, broken jaw and other injuries in the crash.

LAPLACE -- A St. John deputy was hospitalized with multiple broken bones after crashing his car while chasing an armed suspect.

According to the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office, the officer was responding to the report of an unknown man walking along Yorktowne Drive carrying a gun.

When the officer arrived, the suspect fled along a canal bank.

The officer drove after the suspect, eventually crashing his police unit into the canal, according to police. He sustained a broken arm, broken ribs, broken jaw and other injuries in the crash.

EMS transported him to a New Orleans hospital, where he is currently being treated.

The suspect was apprehended, according to police.
