HAMMOND – A man was arrested after a hit-and-run crash that killed a five-year-old boy on Monday night in Hammond.

The hit-and-run crash occurred near the intersection of East Park Street and Simpson Place around 7:15 p.m. According to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, a black Nissan Sentra struck a five-year-old boy, who was then left lying on the side of the road. Witnesses say that after hearing a loud crash, they saw a man get out of the car, walk around it to assess for damages and then get back into the car before fleeing the scene.

The child was seen lying on the side of the road when deputies arrived and they administered CPR before Acadian Ambulance arrived. The boy was taken to a nearby hospital, however later Monday night the child died, the sheriff’s office says.

Officers identified 25-year-old Davonta Abron as a possible suspect in the crash. He was later arrested at his home early Tuesday morning on charges of hit-and-run resulting in death, negligent homicide, three outstanding hold-without bond and parole violation.

The incident is still under investigation.
