NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Police Department is investigating a homicide they said happened early Sunday morning.

Police officials said a man was fatally shot near the intersection of Canal Street and N. Claiborne Avenue. The shooting occurred around 7:30 a.m. When responding to the area, officers found an unidentified man lying under the interstate bridge suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. 

He was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. 

Police are still trying to identify a suspect and motive.

On Sunday afternoon, Tulane University Police Department officials said NOPD officers had detained one suspect in the shooting. Through interviewing, however, they said the "true perpetrator" was still at large.

Tulane University Police said witnesses described the suspected shooter as a black man around 5 feet 11 inches tall, 220 pounds with a stocky build and was scene wearing a brown hoodie and black pants.
