Motorcycle rider crashes into SUV, dies on Chef Highway, NOPD says

The cause of the accident is under investigation, officials say

NEW ORLEANS — Police are investigating a traffic accident on Sunday that killed a local man on Chef Menteur Highway in the East.  

According to investigators, the man, 49, was driving a Suzuki motorcycle eastbound on the highway when he struck the back of a Ford Explorer at the stoplight on Dale Street. 

The man was thrown from the motorcycle upon impact, which struck an empty car in an adjacent parking lot in the 6700 block of the highway, officials said.

EMS arrived and pronounced the man dead on the scene.

Officials said the driver and passenger who were in the Ford that was hit refused EMS treatment. 

The incident is still under investigation and the name of the deceased man is being withheld until his family can be properly notified, police said.

Blood and alcohol tests are pending and it's now up to the Orleans Parish Coroner to determine the cause of death through an autopsy.

The fatal accident is the second deadly crash involving the a motorcycle in the area in two days. On Saturday, a man rider a Suzuki bike was killed in LaPlace, according to Louisiana State Police.
