NOFD rescues baby from Gentilly house fire

NEW ORLEANS -- Firefighters made a dramatic rescue of a baby from a house fire in Gentilly Friday evening.

According to the New Orleans Fire Department, around 7:30 p.m. when crews arrived at the two-alarm fire in the 1300 block of Sere Street there were reports that a baby was in the burning single-story house.

The baby's mother was outside screaming when the crews arrived at the house, which was partially engulfed by flames. Neighbors directed firefighters to where they thought the baby, a one-year-old boy, was trapped.

Firefighters removed a window unit and rescued the child. The baby wasn't breathing when the child was rescued from the house. Rescuers were able to resuscitate after performing CPR on the baby, and the body was breathing and conscious when paramedics arrived on the scene, according to the NOFD.

"They got the fire under control fairly quick," said Superintendent Tim McConnell, "but the most important thing is that they got in through that window and got that child out and began life-saving measure of CPR."

The child was taken to the hospital. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire under investigation.
