Rent too high? An average of $1,400 a month for a 1-bedroom in N.O.

According to Zumpers’ national rent report, the average cost of a one-bedroom apartment in New Orleans is up more than $1,400. The cost of two bedrooms also shot up to more than $1,500.

METAIRIE, La. — Jeremy Housely, a New Orleans resident with a two-year-old son says renting a place to live in New Orleans and it gets more difficult every year.

Housely said the rent got so out of reach for him at one point that he couldn’t afford it. His last place was also infested with bed bugs and that chased him out.

Without enough money for a security deposit for a new home, Housely, along with his pregnant girlfriend and three children became homeless. Housely said a lot of his family and friends have the same issue.

“They’re in the same boat, they struggle just like me,” he said. “The rent used to be cheaper, but everybody is going up on rent.”

And salaries and wages aren’t keeping up. According to Zumpers’ national rent report, the average cost of a one-bedroom apartment in New Orleans is up more than $1,400. The cost of two bedrooms also shot up to more than $1,500.

“I think a lot of places just don’t think about people,” said Housely. “You’re driving people out of this city.”

Sean Dolton said he knows people working two and three jobs just to make ends meet. He worries that as the struggle to pay bills gets worse, the culture of the city will take a hit.
