Speed cameras could be coming to Kenner, but they’ll be moving around

The city of New Orleans has traffic cameras, but the ones in Kenner would not be like the stationary cameras on many city streets, and more like the mobile units that change locations in attempts to capture scofflaws on camera.

KENNER – The speed limit on Martinique in Kenner is 20 mph, but people don’t always drive the speed limit, and this is one reason the city of Kenner could be getting traffic cameras.

The city of New Orleans has traffic cameras, but the ones in Kenner would not be like the stationary cameras on many city streets, and more like the mobile units that change locations in attempts to capture scofflaws on camera.

Some people don’t like the idea, but others think it could help.

“I think all cities should keep the cameras up for the speeders,” said Juanita McElveen.

“Safety is supposed to be when each individual gets behind a vehicle, it’s up to them,” countered Ricky Reese. “I don’t think the traffic cameras are going to stop it.”

Kenner Police Chief Michael Glaser said they will move the cameras around to different neighborhoods to address citizen complaints about speeding, meaning the cameras won’t necessarily be on busy streets.

The cameras may be harsh, but they are not unmerciful as there is some wiggle room. Speeding tickets don’t start until you are at least 10 miles per hour over the limit. And, they are cheaper than if an officer pulls you over, starting at $75.

The earliest date Kenner City Council could discuss or vote on this ordinance for cameras is December 21.
