Two prisoners were found hanging in their respective cells Saturday morning at Louisiana State Penitentiary, according to a news release from the Louisiana Department of Corrections.

Both suicides occurred at the Camp J housing area, although in different parts of the unit. Investigators said there is no indication that the incidents are related.

Around 5:33 am, offender Calvin Craddock, 49, was found hanging in his cell. Craddock was serving a life sentence for aggravated rape from St. Tammany Parish. He had been assigned to LSP since 2006.

Then, around 10:20 am, offender Terrance Carter, 36, was found hanging in his cell. Carter was sentenced to death for first-degree murder from Red River Parish. He was assigned to LSP in 2009 and had been temporarily assigned to the Camp J Management Program off of Death Row for a recent serious rule infraction.

The West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s office was notified and responded, along with the West Feliciana Parish Coroner’s Office.

State penitentiary investigators are reviewing the two suicides. Preliminary information, however, suggests that all protocols were followed.
