HOUMA, La. — The fall inshore shrimp season is set to open Monday.

The Louisiana Shrimp Task Force accepted the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries’ recommended date this morning during its monthly meeting in Houma.

The task force also voted to set ride-a-longs with the department’s biologists ahead of at least the next two fall shrimp seasons when the scientists collect their samples to project the opening date for the season.

This past spring for the first time, shrimpers and biologists collected shrimp next to each other in the same areas and compared their findings ahead of scheduling the opening dates. Now, they will take place in spring and fall.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will release more information about the season in the coming days.

The spring season closed on June 28.
