LSU tries to adjust after overpaying football coach by more than $1 million

According to a report from NOLA.com, the exact amount was $1,001,368 which was spread out over a series of double payments over the course of 2022.

BATON ROUGE, La. — A state audit revealed that the LSU athletic department overpaid football coach Brian Kelly by more than $1 million during his first year on the job.

According to a report from NOLA.com, the exact amount was $1,001,368 which was spread out over a series of double payments in May and June 2022 well as additional supplemental double payments until management noticed in November.

A Louisiana legislative audit said LSU and Kelly "have enacted an adjusted payment schedule so the amount of overpayment will be recouped by the conclusion of fiscal year 2023."

Kelly's 10-year contract totals to $95 million, with a $500,000 bonus each July and another $500,000 if LSU makes a bowl game.

Kelly was hired by LSU in Nov. 2021, after a 12-year tenure as a coach for Notre Dame in Indiana, where he holds the record for the most wins in that school's history.
