Of all things, passing game biggest issue for the Saints

And many of us saw Sunday's game. The defense was fabulous in the second half. The passing game was non-existent and so was the running game in the first half.

In terms of the results, Sunday couldn't have gone any better for the New Orleans Saints.

The Saints beat Tampa Bay by two touchdowns to get to 11-2 on the season, while the Chicago Bears handled Los Angeles 15-6 to drop the Rams to 11-2.

If the season ended today, or if the Saints run the table, New Orleans will be the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs.

But most of us saw the Dallas Cowboys game. The defense looked great at times. The passing game was non-existent.

And many of us saw Sunday's Bucs game. The defense was fabulous in the second half. The passing game was non-existent and so was the running game in the first half.

If it wasn't for the Cowboys game, it would be easy to pass it off as one of Drew Brees' many bad days at Tampa Bay.

But it sure seems like something is up here.

It's pretty evident now that the offense's sparkling performance against the Falcons on Thanksgiving was a lot of smoke and mirrors, and there was a lot of fool's gold in the explosions against the Bengals and Eagles.

Both of those have turned into miserable outfits.

In recent weeks, I've heard several perplexed Saints fans asking the question, "What's wrong with Brees?"

There's nothing wrong with Brees. I'm still convinced he was injured for the second half of last season, but don't believe there's anything physically wrong with him right now.

He wasn't better than he's ever been when so many were touting him as the MVP a month ago, and there's nothing wrong with him now.

Trust me, if the Saints had open receivers, Brees would be getting rid of the ball quickly and putting it on the money ... just like he always has.

Those open receivers just aren't there. Defenses have obviously figured out a way to slow down Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara.

It's time for others to step up. Tre'Quan Smith did in a big way against a depleted Eagles secondary, but Philadelphia, Cincinnati and Atlanta aren't on the schedule the rest of the way.

Many remain critical of Ted Ginn and the Brandon Marshall acquisition. But I've got to believe those veteran targets know how to find the soft spots in a zone more than Smith and Keith Kirkwood do.

Perhaps it's just a lull in a long season filled with eight road games in a 12-game stretch. Perhaps it's nothing a few home games won't cure.

Perhaps it's just the game fighting back after it appeared Brees and Co. had conquered it for a while there.

Whatever it is, Sean Payton's got three weeks to figure it out.

After enduring the 2014-16 drought and then the Minneapolis Miracle, it's almost like some cruel joke that the Saints are sitting atop the NFC with three weeks left in the season and suddenly the passing game is the team's most glaring shortcoming.

The kicking game is better than it's ever been in the Payton era. Wil Lutz is incredible. He's easily the best kicker the Saints have ever had.

Taysom Hill turned Sunday's game around with the blocked punt.

The defense has produced the most sacks in the NFL over the last month. You'd probably have to go back to the Jim Haslett days with Norman Hand/La'Roi Glover days since the Saints could even think about making that kind of a claim.

Now it's simply a matter of coach Dennis Allen's unit being a little more stingy in the first quarter. They sure seem to have the last three figured out of late.

The running game has struggled a bit of late, but I think it's fine. It's nothing a Terron Armstead return and a little bit of help from the passing game couldn't fix in a jiffy.

As for the opposition, both the Carolina Panthers and the Pittsburgh Steelers have fallen on hard times of late. Cam Newton is hurt and his leadership keeps getting questioned.

Ben Roethlisberger was also injured Sunday and his leadership is being questioned.

Both teams will be desperate for wins,

It's up to the Saints to keep them reeling.

While somehow re-discovering their passing game before 2019 gets here.
